RAF Keevil

Arrival by Road

RAF Keevil is situated off of the A350 between Melksham and Trowbridge. It has good access to the M4 motorway via Chippenham. To get to the airfield from Melksham, take the A350 towards Trowbridge and keep following the signs. On reaching the roundabout where the A350 meets the A361, take the 2nd exit and proceed along that road for one mile, before turning left towards Steeple Ashton. Follow this road all the way through Steeple Ashton - do not follow signs to Keevil village - and then turn left once again, signed "Keevil Airfield". Continue on this road for half a mile, before turning left into the airfield access road (immediately before the gate to Spiers Piece Farm).

For security reasons the main gate is often locked, even when personnel are on the unit. Telephone 01380 870411 (club office) or 07931 556646 (launch point mobile) and you will be escorted onto the unit. Before entering, please read the safety brief mounted on the gate, and do not drive around the airfield unescorted until you have been briefed on local procedures.

Arrival by Air

RAF Keevil is strictly PPR; do not arrive by air without permission. PPR may be sought from the RAF Lyneham Hercules Force Headquarters, telephone 01249 896304 (office hours). Please comply with any instructions or caveats issued as part of your clearance. Pilots are to avoid RAF Lyneham controlled airspace to the North, Bristol controlled airspace to the West and Salisbury Plain danger areas to the South, unless cleared to enter by the controlling authority. Glider winch launching takes place up to 3,200 ft AMSL at Keevil, and aircraft may fly variable circuits to all runways. During Bannerdown operating times, visiting pilots are to contact either the CFI or the Duty Instructor on 01380 870411 (club office) or 07931 556646 (launch point mobile) before take-off. Once inbound, pilots are to contact BANNERDOWN BASE on 129.975 MHz at least 5 minutes before arrival.

Emergencies

Aircraft suffering an emergency will be offered all possible assistance. RAF Keevil has only basic emergency equipment (provided by the gliding club) and no permanent fire cover. If possible, emergency aircraft should divert to RAF Lyneham (13 nm NE of Keevil) and contact LYNEHAM APPROACH on 118.425 MHz. If compelled to land at Keevil, pilots should contact BANNERDOWN BASE on 129.975 MHz, stating the nature of the emergency and their intentions. If no reply is received, pilots should make 'blind' calls, stating their position and intentions.

Operating Surfaces

Some tarmac surfaces are in poor condition, and pilots should exercise care when landing. Only the main runway (24/06) will be in use during the competition. In general, pilots should avoid landing on the grass. Specific grass strips will be prepared for landing, and these will be briefed on Day 1 of the competition.
